All you need to know about ulab1x

With one day to go until ulab1x begins here’s all you need to know about ulab and the course.

1. What is u.lab?
U.Lab is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offered for free by the
Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) which offers to “put you into the
driver’s seat of innovation and change” by helping you to make transformational
change by changing yourself.

2. What is u.lab Scotland?
Otto Scharmer (Author of Theory U and one of the U.Lab team) is working with
Scotland to help us use U.Lab as a way of encouraging more people to make the
changes we want to see in our country, both as individuals and as members of our
organisations. We will have additional Scottish-specific content and events
throughout the year (that we are referring to as U.Lab Scotland, ulabscot or the
SMOOC).

3. How can I connect with u.lab Scotland?
While u.lab runs the online course, u.lab Scotland holds events and activities
throughout the year to keep you connected to others in the u.lab community.
There are a number of ways to keep in touch and connect with others in u.lab

4. What is the u.lab1x course?
u.lab1x is an online course called ‘Leading from the Emerging Future’. The course
provides an introduction to a method called Theory U, developed at the
Massachusetts Institute for Technology, for leading profound social, environmental
and personal transformation change in business, government, and civil society
worldwide.

We live in a time of disruptive change. How to activate our capacity to lean into the
emerging future may well be the most important leadership challenge of our time.

How do you cultivate curiosity, compassion and courage in the face of prejudice,
anger and fear?

What you’ll learn:

  • The leadership knowledge that matters most: self-knowledge
  • Capacities of deep listening, precise observation, and dialogue
  • Practices for creating institutional innovations that generate wellbeing in society

5. When does the course begin and how long is it for?
The u.lab1x course begins on 13th September 2018. It lasts 13 weeks, ending in
mid-December.

6. Where can I enrol for the course?
You can enroll for the u.lab1x course at the edX website.

7. Do I need to pay to go on the course?
No, the u.lab1x course is free to participate in – you just need access to the internet.

8. Who is the course for?
Whether you’re a returning participant or totally new to u.lab, you can enroll for the
course.

Unfortunately, learners from one or more of the following countries or regions will not
be able to register for this course: Iran, Cuba and the Crimea region of
Ukraine. While edX has sought licenses from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets
Control (OFAC) to offer our courses to learners in these countries and regions, the
licenses we have received are not broad enough to allow us to offer this course in all
locations. EdX truly regrets that U.S. sanctions prevent us from offering all of our
courses to everyone, no matter where they live.

9. How is the course taught?
u.lab1x is an online course. u.lab will hold a number of ‘real time’ sessions with the
course tutors and participants called Live Sessions at the dates and times
below. Mark your calendar for the Live Sessions and further details will be provided
shortly (don’t worry, if you can’t make these times, sessions are recorded so you can
watch later):
 Co-initiating – 20 Sept – 15.00 to 16.00
 Presencing – 18 Oct – 15.00 to 16.15
 Prototyping – 15 Nov – 15.00 to 16.00
 Movement Building – 13 Dec – 15.00 to 16.00

11. Do I receive a certificate?
You do not need a certificate to show completion of u.lab1x. If you would like to
